In Korea, your first name is your last name and your last name is your first name. Confusing, isn't it? What I mean is, when Americans or Westerners say, "What is your last name?" they are really asking, "What is your family name?" In Korea your family name comes first, but in Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and most all other Western countries, the "last" name is the "family" name, and your "first" name is what your friends call you. It's the opposite in Korea. Just remember that when an English speaker asks you for your first name you should give your 이름 and when they ask you for your last name you should give your 성. Perhaps you could also explain that the names are reversed in Korea. Then you could give them a culture lesson too!
