When you greet a good friend after a long separation it is perfectly okay to give them a hug.
This is true for men hugging women and women hugging women and men hugging men.
When I go home after a long time in Korea, I always give my friends and family a nice big hug to say hi.
Keep in mind that this is only the case for very good friends - not just acquaintances.
