Telephone lines can't provide the bandwidth that ADSL lines can.
My computer is great, but my Internet connection just doesn't have the bandwidth necessary for me to download large files.
My connection's bandwidth is 266 kilobits per second.
The bandwidth is the capacity (amount) that a link between computers allows information to travel at. You probably know that computers use "bits" for information, so measurements of the information transmitted are measured in kilobits - thousands of bits. Many computer modems that communicate through the telephone lines often say that they are 56k - that stands for 56 kilobits per second. I have ADSL, so I wanted to measure my connection and I got 266 kilobits per second. If you want to measure your computer's connection speed you can go to http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and find out how fast your bandwidth is.
