This example originally comes from cooking. When you make something “from scratch” then you are doing it without any help or any premixed ingredients. In America there are a lot of mixes. It is extremely easy to make a cake, because you just buy a mix and add water and eggs and then bake the cake. Nice, huh? But cakes made from mixes aren’t quite as good as those made from scratch. You can also use this to say that someone started with nothing, as in the second example above.
