When something is “arguably” true, then it is possible to say it is true, but not a certain fact. In the first example above, it is impossible to say who the best basketball player ever was, because Michael Jordan from the 1990’s cannot play against Larry Bird of the 1980’s. We can not say for sure that he is the best ever, but we could try to argue that it is true. Get it? This word is often used in matters of taste or preference. Critics will often say, “This is arguably the best movie of the year.” Restaurants sometimes advertise themselves as “Arguably the best Italian food in town.”
